How Online Slots Work: Reels, Symbols, Paytables and Spin Results
One spin in five steps
- You choose a permitted stake.
- Pressing Spin sends a game-round request.
- The random number generator selects an outcome under the game’s mathematical model.
- The interface displays that outcome as stopped reels, symbols or another animation.
- The paytable evaluates wins and the balance updates.
The animation helps people read the result. It does not mean that a player can stop the reels at a favourable instant.
What an RNG does
An RNG produces values used to select outcomes. In a properly implemented slot, future results are not determined by the visible history. A losing sequence does not create a debt that the next spin must repay, and a recent jackpot does not make another jackpot impossible.
Fairness depends on the tested software being deployed correctly and the game round being settled according to its rules. If a round appears wrong, record the round ID rather than relying on a screenshot of the reels alone.
Reels, rows and symbols
Reels are vertical symbol positions. Rows are the visible horizontal positions. A “5×3” slot generally shows five reels and three rows, but expanding or variable-reel mechanics can change the visible grid.
Common symbols include:
- regular low- and high-value symbols;
- wilds that substitute under defined rules;
- scatters that pay or trigger without a normal line;
- bonus symbols;
- collect, mystery or multiplier symbols;
- jackpot symbols in eligible games.
Every exception belongs in the paytable. A wild may not substitute for a scatter, and a scatter may trigger only from specific reels.
How to read a paytable
Before playing, locate:
- the win mechanic;
- symbol values at the current stake;
- direction of wins;
- minimum matching-symbol count;
- wild and scatter rules;
- feature triggers;
- RTP version;
- stake range and extra-bet options;
- maximum win or liability limit.
Do not infer a payout from a symbol’s visual prominence.
Winning patterns
A slot may use fixed paylines, adjustable lines, adjacent-reel ways, clusters or a “pays anywhere” count. The result is evaluated only under the stated system.
Example: in a 20-payline game, three matching symbols on consecutive reels may pay only when they sit on one active line. In a 243-ways game, their row positions can differ if they appear on adjacent reels under the rules.
Stake calculation
Some games show the total cost per spin. Others expose coin value, coins per line and number of active lines:
total stake = coin value × coins per line × active lines
Confirm the total displayed before spinning. An ante option or feature purchase may multiply the normal cost.
Features
Free spins, respins, cascades and multipliers are part of the game model. “Free” spins are paid for statistically through the model or a promotion; they do not remove the house edge. A retrigger extends a feature only when the specified symbols or conditions appear.
What cannot improve the odds
- stopping the animation;
- changing spin speed;
- switching after a losing result;
- choosing a time of day;
- copying another player’s stake;
- following “hot” or “cold” labels;
- increasing the stake because a bonus appears close.
Worked example
Suppose a five-reel game pays for three matching lantern symbols on an active line. You stake £0.20 and the paytable shows a 5× multiplier for that combination.
win = total stake × multiplier = £0.20 × 5 = £1.00
If two lines qualify, each is evaluated and the results are added, subject to the game rules. The example explains settlement; it does not predict frequency.

Is the result selected when I press Spin?
In a typical online slot, the game server determines the round outcome through its RNG process when the request is accepted. The animation then displays it.
Does pressing Stop change the result?
Normally it shortens the animation rather than changing the selected outcome. Check the provider rules for the exact game.
Are demo and real-money spins different?
They should use the same rules and model, but demo play does not risk money or prove what a later random spin will do.
Why did matching symbols not pay?
They may not be on a valid line, adjacent reels, qualifying cluster or required direction. Check the paytable and round record.
